February 28, 2013 ON THE ROAD - FINALLY!

It's so amazing to me that two weeks have gone by since we started our RV adventure. Or should I say?  It's really been two years of planning, praying and imagining what it would be like to travel in an RV.

OK....I'll add all of that stuff about planning & day dreaming on our "All about us"  section.  For now, I need to play catch up.  We started the actual adventure 2 weeks ago today.  I know. I know.  I really wanted to do this Blog right.  You know?  I need to have all the right looks and tabs in place. The problem is that I'm not very techie and have never done a blog before.  I just like to have new adventures and am excited to journal this phase of our life together, on the road in our RV. Here goes!  I wish I could have recorded everything daily. I will though...once I get the hang of all of this.

OAK MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

We officially left home on Friday 2/28 & spent the night at Oak Mountain State Park, AL (south of Birmingham, AL).  It was a nice park - lots of trees, true camping area.  We are used to traveling in an old Coleman Pop-up, so were a little nervous about parking a 40' 5th Wheel.  Whew...good thing, it wasn't busy.  We were able to park in a pull-through.  Yay!  Who invented pull-through sites anyway?  Whoever you are?  THANK YOU!

We had no problem pulling our RV into a site after our experience a few minutes before.  You know?  The worse case scenario that can NEVER happen, especially your first time out.  GPS - Ahhh.....that wonderful technical gadget that is suppose to guide you to your destination.  While we are quietly debating about something & trusting our GPS to navigate us to our location, we find ourselves going down hill into a residential neighborhood looking straight into a cul-de-sac. It figures! AND it had to happen sooner or later to us newbie RVers on our first adventure out!

Now mind you, I am married (happily for close to 40 years) to the "do it yourself" guy - Dave.  I take a deep breath & decide that the only choice I have...given this situation is to pray & then trust that Dave will get us out of this mess.  Next time, I will remember to take a picture.  It looked like an impossible situation.  We needed to back up a hill and make a sharp turn at the  fork in the road.

Dave backed up and turned the RV to his (sharp) left and then was able to turn the truck/RV around in the opposite direction back down the road.  I stood outside, like most wives do - with my hands on my hips directing him as he backed up.  I talked to him on my I-phone to his car blue tooth.  What a great way to give directions.  Except, for all you newbies like me, which way is right or is it left?  His left, my right?  Hellooooo?  OK...you veterans know how much fun we had trying to make this maneuver.

Amazingly, we managed to escape and head on our way to the State Park.  Too bad, we didn't have a 90 degree turn on our RV, instead of 88 degree.  It just looks like maybe, 2% would have made a difference.  We lost a little piece of our RV that day (picture above) - our little reminder that we made it out of an "impossible" situation. At least, that is behind us  & are now REALLY ready to continue our RV journey.

Oak Mountain State Park is a nice park.  There is plenty to do in this park - swimming, horseback riding, golf, etc.  It was a great location off of I65 and perfect for an overnight stay.  We plan on returning for another night on our way back home.  Total cost to stay here for one night is $30.78.
